A battery traceability record must survive handovers

Traceability has practical value when records remain connected to the physical battery through manufacture, service and transfer. Teams should define identity, configuration and evidence ownership before collecting a large volume of data.

A battery can accumulate a large volume of production and operating data without leaving its next owner with a useful record. Traceability depends on connections: between a physical asset and its identity, between a result and its conditions, and between successive organisations handling the product. The record should be designed around the decisions it must support rather than the quantity of information available to collect.

Establish a persistent identity

Define how the cell, assembly or pack is identified at each relevant boundary. The system should connect those levels where the programme needs to investigate manufacturing or service history. An identifier has limited value if it cannot be reconciled with the actual product after an approved replacement or repair.

Assign responsibility for preserving the identity through each handover. Manufacturing, logistics and service teams may use different systems, so the link cannot depend on everyone recognising a familiar internal code. Test the transfer process with the organisations that will actually receive and use the records.

Keep evidence with its conditions

A test result needs the method, date, configuration and relevant process information that makes it interpretable. Without these details, a future recipient may mistake a development sample result for production evidence or compare measurements produced under different conditions.

The Faraday Institution's Nextrode work connects metrology and manufacturing data with process understanding. For a traceability programme, that supports retaining meaningful context rather than just final values. Decide which evidence is needed to investigate quality and which information requires controlled access because of its commercial sensitivity.

Record authorised changes

The configuration of a battery may change during its life. Establish how software releases, component replacements and other approved interventions are recorded. The current record should distinguish the original product from later changes while preserving the history needed to understand what happened.

Avoid overwriting an old result simply because a newer estimate is available. A sequence of records with clear methods and configurations can help explain an issue. A single current score may be convenient but can remove the evidence needed to investigate whether a change reflects the product, the method or the software interpreting it.

Design the final handover

ReLiB's programme includes data-informed recycling routes, highlighting the relevance of information at end of life. Define what a service, secondary-use or recycling recipient needs and how it can obtain that information through an agreed route. Do not assume that every future partner will have access to the original manufacturer's systems.

This is an operational record design, not a claim that a particular set of fields satisfies every legal requirement. Establish any applicable obligations separately for the market and transaction. A useful traceability system enables the intended decisions with reliable identity, context and ownership. That gives the battery's successive custodians better evidence while preventing data volume from becoming a substitute for a record they can actually interpret.
