Electric HGV trials should answer a route question

An electric truck trial becomes useful when it tests a specific service requirement. Route selection, loading, charging and recovery arrangements should be defined together so the result can inform a repeatable operating decision.

A demonstration truck can generate considerable interest while leaving the purchasing question unanswered. A fleet needs to know whether a particular vehicle can support a particular service under its operating conditions. That makes the route, load and depot arrangement the centre of a useful electric HGV trial.

Choose a bounded assignment

Select work that can be described clearly and monitored consistently. Record its origins, destinations, loading pattern, stopping opportunities and return requirements. Avoid assigning the trial vehicle only the lightest or shortest work unless that is the actual fleet segment being evaluated. Equally, do not design an extreme assignment that no planned deployment would regularly face.

Specify the commercial requirement as well as the route. Delivery windows, trailer compatibility, yard access and the availability of loading staff all influence whether a proposed charging plan is realistic. The trial team should understand which requirements can change and which are fixed by the customer's service expectations.

Put charging inside the test

The vehicle and charger must be evaluated as one operating arrangement. Confirm where the truck can park, how it reaches the connection and whether trailers or neighbouring vehicles affect access. A charging session that works during a quiet demonstration may prove difficult when the depot is busy and departures overlap.

Obtain site specific technical advice on the proposed electrical installation. Match the charging plan to available dwell periods and the truck's supported charging behaviour. Record energy delivered, session interruptions and readiness for departure. A nominal charger rating does not by itself establish that the vehicle receives the energy it needs on schedule.

Record interventions honestly

Create a log for substitutions, unplanned charging, route changes and additional staff support. These interventions are not necessarily evidence that the technology is unsuitable. They show what the fleet would need to provide if it repeated the assignment at scale. The important distinction is between a temporary trial inconvenience and a permanent operating dependency.

Include workshop and recovery teams in the trial brief. They need appropriate vehicle specific information, support contacts and clear boundaries for their role. Ask the supplying parties to explain how a failure would be handled on the actual route. A trial should exercise the communication process without deliberately introducing unsafe faults.

Decide what can be replicated

At the end, compare the observed operation with the requirements agreed before the trial. Identify which assumptions were supported, which need revision and which remain untested. Retain difficult results alongside successful days. Procurement decisions become weaker when the final report removes the conditions that made the vehicle challenging to operate.

A useful conclusion is specific: a defined vehicle configuration can serve a defined route group with a defined charging and support arrangement. It should also identify what would need further testing before extending that conclusion. This discipline turns an electric HGV demonstration into an investment decision the operations team can explain and maintain.
