A digital twin should earn trust one decision at a time

A digital representation is useful when its evidence fits a specific decision. Automotive teams should define model scope, calibration and update responsibilities before relying on a digital twin to guide engineering or operations.

The term digital twin can describe anything from a visual representation to a model linked to measurements from a physical product. Its business value depends less on the label than on the decision it helps make. A model useful for understanding a broad trend may be inadequate for approving a detailed design change.

Define trust at the level of intended use. State the question, the evidence required and the limits of the representation. This gives the team a practical way to assess usefulness without treating one successful application as proof of universal accuracy.

Declare the model's scope

Identify the systems and behaviour represented, along with meaningful exclusions. Explain which inputs are measured, inferred or assumed. A model can appear detailed while simplifying the factor that dominates a particular decision, so scope should be assessed against purpose.

Arm's automotive resources include virtual prototyping, and ASAM ODS addresses storage and retrieval of testing data. Together they provide context for organising models and evidence. The organisation still needs its own argument for connecting a particular digital representation to the physical product.

Establish a comparison with observations

Choose measurements suitable for checking the behaviour relevant to the decision. Ensure that the physical test configuration and model configuration correspond sufficiently for the comparison. A disagreement may reflect a configuration difference rather than a model defect, and the team needs a method for distinguishing those cases.

Keep calibration separate from independent evaluation where the intended assurance requires it. A model adjusted to match a dataset should not be described as independently validated by the same dataset. Record the observations used for adjustment and the evidence used to assess its resulting suitability.

Govern the connection to changing products

Software, calibration and hardware changes can make a digital representation stale. Define which changes require an update or a renewed suitability review. A connection to current data does not automatically mean that the model's structure still describes the current product.

Assign ownership of the model and its input pipeline. Engineering may understand the representation while operations owns the measurements that feed it. Both need a clear route for reporting changes and resolving inconsistencies. Otherwise an apparently live twin can continue producing results from outdated assumptions.

Treat unresolved differences as part of the suitability record. A reviewer needs to see both what the model reproduced and where its behaviour remains unexplained, especially before using it for a new purpose.

Use uncertainty to shape decisions

Report conclusions with the limits that matter to the intended action. If the model supports comparison between options but not an absolute prediction, explain that distinction. Management can then use it appropriately without interpreting a precise output as a stronger claim than the evidence supports.

Review the twin after the decision and compare relevant outcomes where possible. This creates a feedback route for improving the model and its use. A trustworthy digital twin is therefore a maintained relationship between purpose, representation and observation. It earns reliance through explicit, bounded decisions rather than through the sophistication of its visual presentation.
